Kaifeng Wu and I designed Memory Labs, a knowledge management tool for Apple Vision Pro, commissioned by John Kao. It uses VR and AI to build and navigate a person's knowledge architecture. We treated it as a way to share not just information but biographical experience and point of view.

Challenge

Knowledge is non-hierarchical, but the tools for organizing it usually are. Obsidian and Softspace both offer ways to structure and link ideas, but they impose rigid structures or keep exploration flat. Memory Labs needed to hold a large, loosely connected body of information and stay legible while doing it. The tool had to work in two directions. As a personal archive, it needed to capture how ideas connect, not just that they connect. The nature and context of a relationship between two nodes carries as much meaning as the link itself. That meant finding a way to record, manage, and retrieve a lot of information without burying the user in it. As a sharing platform, the reference point was a Wikipedia deep dive: roaming from one domain to the next without a fixed path. But walking into someone else's intellectual world gets disorienting fast. The interface had to allow open-ended exploration while keeping a high-level view available on request.

Solution

VR gave us room to work. The 3D environment holds more information in view than a screen does, and hand gestures let users move through it without breaking from what they were doing. I designed the zoom gesture, which governs the trade between detail and breadth. The system keeps the amount of visible information constant and adjusts the ratio. Zooming in surfaces detail and reduces the number of nodes in view. Zooming out drops detail and widens the field, so users keep their bearings. The gesture puts convergent and divergent thinking on a single control. We also built an experimental AI persona to act as a guide. It recommends connections between nodes based on context. Voice commands and hand gestures both control location, so users can move through a lab by speaking or by reaching.
